As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned ‘Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit’ (GIZ) GmbH supports the German government in achieving its development policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian government and international donors. The Ethiopian government recognizes the high economic value of the lowland areas and their products. Therefore, the pastoral and agro-pastoral population is supported in strengthening their drought resilience, allowing them to adapt their farming system to a changing natural and economic environment. German development cooperation participates with the programme “Strengthening Drought Resilience of the Pastoral and Agro-Pastoral Population in the Lowlands of Ethiopia” (SDR-ASAL) in selected areas in Afar and Somali region. The programme comprises of seven projects. Major activities are participatory land use planning with all stakeholders in selected kebeles, water harvesting, and rehabilitation of degraded dry valleys followed by participatory rangeland management as well as training for pastoralists, administration and service providers.

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Team of the SDR-ASAL programme is in the process of revising and improving the monitoring system and related tools. Moreover, there are a variety of surveys which need to be planned and organized for 2021. The intern shall assist the M&E team during these processes for an efficient implementation in accordance with the rules and regulations of GIZ.

Responsibilities:

  • Update the template and master table of the team leader reporting according to developed changes and integrate data delivered on a monthly basis
  • Keep M&E templates, documents and analyses updated on the Data Management System (DMS)
  • Assist the M&E team at national and regional level in data entry, aggregation and analysis
  • Assist the M&E team in the preparation and organization of surveys
  • Assist the M&E team in establishing a participant/beneficiary data base

Tasks

Under the supervision of the advisor for monitoring and evaluation and in cooperation with the project managers of SDR-ASAL and the regional offices in Afar and Somali region:

  • Familiarize with the project indicators, monitoring system and related tools (mostly team leader reporting format)
  • Control delivered data regarding consistency and completeness and aggregate data in the respective master table
  • Familiarize with DMS in use by project managers and staff and update relevant data, reports and templates
  • Collect and digitalize relevant data for establishing a participant/beneficiary data base
  • Assist the advisor for M&E in any other given task

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.Sc in the field of data management/science or related fields.
  • Initial experience in data management and analysis.

Competences:

  • Excellent communication skills orally and written in English language.
  • Very good computer skills, esp. Microsoft Excel (and Word).
  • Very good attention to detail and affinity for numbers.
  • Good analytic and organizing skills.
  • IT knowledge related to data management systems.
  • Very high capacity of team work with internal staff members also in the regional offices
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in an English-spoken working environment.
  • Sense for continuous quality improvement.
  • High degree of initiative and creativeness.
