Job Summary

In this role, you will support the Ethiopian government, local and international NGOs, development partners, and the private sector to implement tree-based landscape restoration at scale by:

  • Supporting the green legacy initiative and restoration activities by the Ethiopian government
  • Supporting the assessment, design and establishment of appropriate public and private financial and investment mechanisms to support tree-based landscape restoration
  • Building the capacity of government in identifying and addressing enabling conditions necessary for long-term restoration implementation success
  • Building the capacity of local tree-based landscape restoration companies and projects to attract finance from the public and private sectors
  • Increasing the scientific foundation in planning, implementing and monitoring tree-based landscape restoration
  • Sharing best practices in tree-based landscape restoration implementation across landscapes in Ethiopia, through the AFR100 Initiative, and beyond
  • Developing and implementing a monitoring system to track the progress and challenges of the implementation of tree-based landscape restoration

This position is remote due to Covid-19, but you will be based at WRI’s office in Addis Ababa once restrictions have lifted.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support cross-sectoral integration around restoration at both national and sub-national levels. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting the development of restoration potential maps and cross-sectoral restoration action plans, the initiation and stewarding of a national cross-sectoral platform on restoration, and the establishment of tree-based landscape restoration baseline in priority landscapes
  • Support establishing national restoration platforms and co-host meetings, workshops and discussion with other stakeholders
  • Ensure Ethiopian stakeholders fully engage and benefit from AFR100’s financial and technical partners
  • Increase financial flows to tree-based landscape restoration implementation. This includes, but is not limited to, developing a pipeline of investable restoration businesses which can then be published online for private investors to consider, designing at least one Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) financing scheme for restoration activities, engaging banks and rural lenders to incentivize tree-based landscape restoration, and helping mobilize more domestic public-sector budget towards tree-based landscape restoration
  • Build and strengthen partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations, companies active in tree products and/or services, and the donor community to coalesce action around tree-based landscape restoration at scale
  • Building WRI’s global and regional experiences, support the development of context based strategy of restoration
  • Support development of concrete concept notes that would help to expand the ongoing support of WRI in Ethiopia as well as Africa’s region
  • Budgeting and grant reporting and contribute to fundraising efforts towards WRI’s work on restoration in Ethiopia

Job Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree and above forestry, natural resources management and related discipline with experience in business development and entrepreneurship, business administration, or similar required (or a Bachelor's degree with 2 additional years of experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant full time experience required
  • Background and/or experience in the land use, forestry and/or sustainable agriculture sectors highly desirable
  • Practical experience in forest management, natural resource management planning and implementation, working with national and regional government partners
  • Expertise in, or at least familiarity with, finance and/or value chain development a plus
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in both English and Amharic with knowledge of other languages
  • Effective communicator, particularly when it comes to communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Independent and collaborative, with the ability to work well with a wide range of stakeholders and actively build synergies across WRI programs and with partner organizations
  • Strong organizational, analytical and strategic skills
  • Comfortable with adjusting work priorities as circumstances evolve while staying on course with strategic directions
  • Self-motivated and perseverant in understanding and explaining issues to partners and contractors
  • At ease in convening and facilitating discussions with technical and political partners and stakeholders
  • Willing to work relatively flexible work hours with possible evening calls and to travel inside and outside Ethiopia
  • Prior experience of working in the international NGO sector is essential
