As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes.

The Pan African University (PAU) is a continent-wide initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC) to revitalize higher education and research in Africa. It is aiming to exemplify excellence, nurture quality, and enhance the attractiveness and global competitiveness of African higher education and research. The 5 thematic institutes of the PAU, which are located in all 5 regions of the continent, will establish Master and PhD programs and engage in collaborative and development oriented research programs.

GIZ is supporting the Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology of the African Union Commission (HRST) in the establishment of the Pan African University. The programme is focusing on support to the PAU Rectorate and to the institution building of one of the five PAU Institutes, namely the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences, including Climate Change (PAUWES), which is based in Tlemcen, Algeria.

The GIZ PAU team in Addis Ababa offers capacity building to the Department of HRST and the PAU Rectorate, concerning the steering and planning of the overall PAU structure. The GIZ PAU team in Tlemcen/ Algeria focuses on the direct support of PAUWES in its institutional establishment e.g. in supporting the setting up of teaching and study programs as well as the building up of applied research. The GIZ PAU team is recruiting candidates for an internship in the field of administration, project and event management as follows:

Scope of Training 


Your tasks will be to support the GIZ PAU team in Addis Ababa in its efforts to assist its partners in the realisation of this complex project. You will be integrated into the daily operations, supporting the team in its tasks and participating in internal meetings. You will be expected to keep yourself up to date with the core developments of the project in order to be able to react timely to various requests.


  • You will support the PAU Team with tasks such as the daily operational performance of all administrative tasks.
  • You will support the PAU team with the  filing documents in reference files as well as with the GIZ online filing system of DMS in line with the filing rules of GIZ
  • You will support the team in the preparations of high-level meetings, such as those of the PAU governing bodies (Council, Senate, Technical Working Group) and the Key & Thematic Partners of PAU. 
  • You will be supporting the PAU Team with record keeping of the inventory with the GIZ online inventory file system Onsite
  • You will be supporting the PAU Team with coordinating flights booking, hotels and visa request within the administration team.
  • You will be supporting the PAU Team with record keeping of the financial document Tax declaration.
  • In addition, you will take on other technical and logistical tasks to support communication and knowledge and event management.

Job Requirements

Qualifications, Experiences and Minimum Requirement

  • You have successfully completed a Bachelor’s Degree or a higher university degree with a focus on (higher) education, social sciences, public policy or administration, communication sciences, organizational development, business administration or other related study fields.
  • You have excellent communication skills in English, both in speaking and writing.
  • You have already gained some professional experience (e.g. through internships or volunteering) and have first experience in administrative or project management tasks.
  • You have excellent intercultural and diplomatic skills or the willingness to learn, as you will work with high-level African and international political actors and partners on sensitive political issues.
  • You are able to work independently, show initiative and are able to ask for guidance or raise issues if they occur.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft office programs, are self-organized and motivated to work in an intercultural team in our office in Addis Ababa.
