The Position 

International Fund for Africa (IFA) seeks to hire a proactive and flexible School Eye Health Optometrist Officer to join our team.

Job description
The Optometrist officer as part of the team will play a key role in implementing the School Eye Health Project, assisting the coordinator in training teachers in vision screening, refraction and dispensation of spectacles at school sites located mainly in Addis Abeba and sometimes to semi-rural areas of Amhara region. In addition, will work within the budget and to agreed KPIs.

Primary duties and responsibilities

The Optometrist Officer performs a wide range of duties including some or all of the following:
Technical Duties
  • Identifies and liaise with contact teacher;
  • Train teacher screeners in vision screening;
  • Liaises with class teachers to ensure flow of children for screening;
  • Check screening venue and measure and mark the screening distance;
  • List children to be screened, their gender and age;
  • Maintain a record of those screened and those referred;
  • Follow up those who have/have not gone for treatment;
  • Screen all children shortlisted by the teachers and record findings;
  • Ensure children who fail screening are referred for refraction;
  • Conduct refraction at school site and record prescription;
  • Collects spectacles, deliver them to the schools and works with contact teacher to ensure the correct children are given the correct spectacles.
Administrative Duties:
  • Maintains close communication with Project Coordinator and Program Manager;
  • Assist in planning all aspects of implementation;
  • Assist in developing a Standard Operating Manual;
  • Coordinates training of screeners;
  • Assist in facilitating payment for vendors and partners;
  • Coordination and collaboration with partners, sensitization of other stakeholders;
  • Monitoring: ensure regular reporting; compilation; use indicators to identify problems;

Job Requirements:

Job Requirements:
Educational qualification and experience required: 

1. Education:
  • B.Sc. degree in Optometry.   
2. Experience:
  • Two years of work experience as an Optometrist;
  • Certification as an optometrist;
  • Experience working with children and training activities ;
  • Project management experience and skills are desirable;
  • Excellent communication skills ;
  • ability to develop strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and
  • In the smooth management of the eye health projects.
3. Skills: 
  • Highly effective in planning and management; communication and organization;
  • Willingness to travel field areas for short period of time if needed;
  • Good working knowledge of written and spoken English is essential;
  • Willingness to work after office hours and/or holidays if required;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Good interpersonal relationship;
  • Good working knowledge and skills of Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.).
