Background of the Role
The DDR programme in Ethiopia was launched following the peace agreement signed on 2 November 2022 between the Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). This initiative aims to disarm, demobilize, and reintegrate former combatants into civilian life, fostering reconciliation and sustainable development across Ethiopia.
UNDP supports the National Rehabilitation Commission (NRC) in implementing this programme, working closely with national and international partners. Drivers play a critical role in ensuring safe mobility for staff and stakeholders engaged in this mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reliable Driving Services
- Apply defensive driving principles at all times
- Check fuel, water, and oils daily before travel
- Keep vehicles clean and ready for service
- Provide punctual transport services to staff
Vehicle Maintenance and Documentation
- Conduct daily checks (oil, water, battery, brakes, tires)
- Perform minor repairs and arrange for additional services
- Maintain accurate log sheets signed by users
- Report maintenance needs promptly
Administrative and Operational Support
- Assist staff with workshops, meetings, and guest reception
- Deliver and receive messages from partners
- Support procurement team with urgent purchases
Safety and Security
- Ensure UNSMS compliance for passengers
- Report accidents promptly to supervisors, UNDSS, and local authorities
- Maintain required documents (insurance, logs, maps, first aid kit, spare parts)
- Handle officials and visitors with tact and professionalism
Institutional Arrangement
The Driver will work under the guidance of the DDR Director, direct supervision of the DDR Programme Specialist, and matrix reporting to the Administrative Analyst. Collaboration with programme and operations staff is central to this role.

Required Skills and Experience
Education
- Secondary Education with valid driver’s license
- Diploma in Auto Mechanics (asset)
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in international development organizations
- Valid 3rd grade driving license required
- Knowledge of 4WD vehicles and minor repairs
- Defensive driving training (asset)
- Computer literacy (desired)
- Experience with UN or NGOs (asset)
Language
- Fluency in English and national language required
