Job Overview:
Are you an experienced Biochemistry Laboratory Scientist looking for a career with impact in Africa? The African Union (AU), through its Africa CDC Reference Laboratories, is hiring a Laboratory Scientist specializing in biochemistry, molecular biology, and clinical diagnostics. This role is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and contributes directly to strengthening public health laboratories and disease surveillance across Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced biochemical tests, including enzyme assays, protein electrophoresis, blood gas analysis, and other clinical diagnostics.
  • Analyze blood, urine, saliva, and tissue samples using state-of-the-art laboratory instruments such as PCR machines, ELISA readers, spectrophotometers, mass spectrometers, and chromatographs.
  • Develop and validate new laboratory protocols, ensuring quality control, quality assurance, biosafety, and biosecurity standards are met.
  • Interpret laboratory results and provide accurate biochemical reports to physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Collaborate with laboratory teams, clinicians, researchers, and external partners to support Africa CDC public health initiatives.
  • Train and supervise laboratory technicians, and participate in research projects and scientific publications.
  • Represent the laboratory division in conferences, workshops, and policy-related meetings.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field; OR Bachelor’s degree with 2–5 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Proven experience in clinical laboratories, molecular diagnostics, and biochemical testing.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS/LIMS) and software for data management.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in clinical biochemistry, molecular biology, and laboratory quality management systems.
  • Experience in research laboratory settings and clinical sample analysis.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken).
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Africa and internationally.
  • Leadership skills with capability to train and mentor laboratory staff.
