The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is recruiting for a Driver/Mechanic position in Jijiga, Somali Region under the Groundwater Access Facility Initiative. About the Project

The Groundwater Access Facility Initiative (GAFA), launched in May 2024, aims to enhance groundwater resource management in the Horn of Africa. In partnership with CIFF, UNDP is implementing the Productive Use of Water Program pilot phase, which includes drilling 20 wells equipped with solar‑powered pumps and water storage facilities. This project will provide safe drinking water to over 150,000 people, while also supporting health facilities and schools across the Somali Region.


Position: Driver/Mechanic – Jijiga

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide reliable and secure driving services, applying defensive driving principles
  • Ensure vehicles are clean, fueled, and ready for transport services
  • Perform day‑to‑day maintenance checks (oil, water, brakes, tires, battery)
  • Conduct minor repairs and arrange for additional services when needed
  • Maintain log sheets and ensure proper documentation
  • Support maintenance of drilling machines, compressors, trucks, and field vehicles
  • Inspect and troubleshoot mechanical issues, request spare parts, and maintain records
  • Assist programme staff with logistics, workshops, and procurement tasks
  • Ensure safety and security of UN staff, vehicles, and assets

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Secondary education with valid driver’s license; Diploma in Auto Mechanics or related fields is an asset
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years in international development organizations; proven experience as rig mechanic
  • Skills:
    • Valid 3rd grade driving license
    • Defensive driving certification
    • Experience with drilling machines and 4WD vehicles
    • Computer literacy
  • Languages: Fluency in English and national language required
