The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).
AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 as biomedical research, clinical trial and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.
Position 1: Junior Researcher (Malaria Microscopist)
Qualifications:
- Education: BSc Degree in Laboratory Sciences/Technology from a recognized institution, having experience in malaria microscopy is an advantage
Skills and Competences
- Basic computer skills (MS word, excel, power point, etc)
- Self-driven, motivated and result oriented
- Ability to work independently and under pressure
- Excellent interpersonal communication
- Willing to support others and share workloads
- Flexible to work off-working hours or weekends and holidays as needed
Duty station: Adama
Position 2: Junior Researcher (Genomics)
Qualifications and Competences
- B.Sc. degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Medical Laboratory Science/Technology and related field of study
- Work experience is not required but experience in sequencing lab setting is advantageous.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Fluent in English Languages (speaking, writing, reading and listening)
- Advanced skill of computer science
- Ability to work with others/team work, including international collaborators
Duty station: Addis Ababa AHRI Head Office
Position 3: Assistant Researcher – Entomologist
Qualification and Experience:
- BSc in Biology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Biotechnology and MSc in Medical Entomology or any Biomedical Science fields.
- Two years and above work experience
- Publications have an advantage
Desired Skills and Experiences:
- Experience in immature and adult mosquito collection and species identification with different techniques
- Experience in insecticide susceptibility tests (Bioassay Tests)
- Experience in laboratory methods such as immunological methods (blood meal and sporozoite ELISA), isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA or protein samples
- Experience in research projects
Duty station: Addis Ababa with a frequent travel to the field sites and stay for months in the field
