🎓 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships 2027
The Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia invites Ethiopian nationals to apply for the 2027 MEXT Scholarship programs offered by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho). These scholarships provide opportunities for students to pursue higher education in Japan under full sponsorship.
Eligibility
- Only Ethiopian citizens are eligible to apply through the Embassy of Japan in Ethiopia.
- Non‑Ethiopian citizens must apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their country of citizenship.

Note: The Embassy does not process applications for other programs.
Application Submission
All application documents must be sent by postal service to the address below. Hand‑delivered or emailed applications will not be accepted.

Deadline: Applications must arrive by Friday, 29 May 2026.
Important Notes
- Only complete applications will be considered.
- Documents must be typed — handwritten applications will not be accepted.
- All documents must be printed vertically on A4 paper.
- Photos should be glued, not stapled.
- Copies of graduate certificates and transcripts must bear the original university stamp.
- Recommendation letters must have original signatures and stamps.
- Submitted documents are non‑returnable.
Screening Process
1. Document Screening
Applicants must submit all required documents by the deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be processed.
2. Written Examination
Those who pass the document screening will be invited to a written exam (scheduled for June 2026, TBD).
3. Interview
Applicants who pass the written exam will proceed to an interview (scheduled for July 2026, TBD). Both will be conducted physically at the Embassy of Japan in Addis Ababa.
4. Primary Screening Certificate
Successful candidates will receive a Passing Certificate for Primary Screening to apply to Japanese universities.
5. Secondary Screening
The secondary screening will be conducted in Tokyo based on global competition. No physical exam or interview is required at this stage.
Additional Information
Due to the large number of applications received each year, the Embassy cannot confirm receipt of documents. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for exams and interviews. Inquiries regarding non‑shortlisted applicants will not be entertained.
