The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Field Manager to provide operational leadership and coordination of NRC’s activities at the field office level in North Afar. The role ensures efficient, secure, and accountable management of programmes and support functions, overseeing staff, resources, and external engagement.
Position: Field Manager – Ethiopia North Afar
Responsibilities
- Provide line management for directly reporting staff, including performance management, workforce planning, recruitment, induction, and staff development.
- Ensure Duty of Care for staff and support their achievement of goals aligned with NRC’s country strategy.
- Deliver field‑specific analysis and inputs for Area Office strategies.
- Lead communication and collaboration with communities, local authorities, and humanitarian actors.
- Represent NRC in external stakeholder engagements at the field level.
- Ensure effective coordination and information flow between programme and support teams and the Area Office.
- Manage field office resources, including budget holder responsibilities, procurement, and asset management.
- Ensure timely, efficient, and quality implementation of operations in line with NRC policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of the Afar context and humanitarian displacement issues in Ethiopia.
- Experience with ICLA, WASH, Shelter, Livelihood & Food Security, and Education programmes.
- Knowledge and/or experience of Ethiopia’s legal and judicial context (highly desirable).
- Experience working in complex political and humanitarian environments.
- Familiarity with donor requirements (EHF, ECHO, NMFA, SIDA, GFFO, etc.).
- Experience working in consortia and advocacy.
- Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in diverse contexts.

- Travel: Approx. 20% (to project sites and coordination meetings)
- Salary/Benefits: Grade 8 on NRC’s Ethiopia salary scale, with accompanying terms and conditions
