About the Role

Hope for Justice Ethiopia is seeking a compassionate and dedicated House Mother to join our Social Work Department at Debora Light House in Addis Ababa. The role is central to ensuring that the Lighthouse provides a safe, nurturing, and supportive home environment for children who have been rescued from exploitative or vulnerable situations.

The House Mother will take full responsibility for the wellbeing, safety, and daily care of children in residence, including supervision during night-time, weekends, and holidays. This position requires strong emotional intelligence, patience, and the ability to create a stable environment that fosters healing, growth, and trust.

The House Mother will report to the Head of House Mothers and work closely with social workers, nurses, and other staff to provide holistic care that meets each child’s physical, emotional, and developmental needs.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Child Care and Supervision

  • Provide consistent love, attention, discipline, and care to all children under your supervision.
  • Treat every child fairly, impartially, and with dignity, ensuring an inclusive and safe environment.
  • Conduct regular night checks (every two hours) to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children.
  • Support children with personal hygiene routines, proper grooming, and maintenance of their personal spaces.
  • Oversee children’s participation in daily chores (cleaning, tidying, organizing communal areas).
  • Administer medication as directed by the Lighthouse nurse and document all treatments.
  • Promote emotional stability by providing a calm, structured environment, especially for children who have experienced trauma.

2. Behavior Management and Safeguarding

  • Strictly adhere to Hope for Justice’s Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct.
  • Implement positive discipline and non-violent behavior management techniques.
  • Identify and report any disciplinary or health-related concerns to the designated project staff.
  • Respond swiftly to medical emergencies by notifying the nurse and following prescribed procedures.
  • Encourage mutual respect, empathy, and teamwork among children.
  • Ensure all interactions with children reflect Hope for Justice’s core values of compassion, safety, and integrity.

3. Training and Collaboration

  • Deliver weekly Child Wellbeing training sessions in coordination with the Social Worker and Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO).
  • Participate in case review meetings and provide input on the emotional and behavioral progress of children.
  • Maintain professional communication with the team to ensure consistent and coordinated care.
  • Assist in developing behavior plans, safety strategies, and rehabilitation support for children in the program.

About You

Educational Background

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Additional training or certification in childcare, psychology, social work, or early childhood education (highly desirable).

Professional Experience

  • Proven experience in childcare, preferably in an institutional or organizational setting.
  • Experience working with vulnerable or trauma-affected children.
  • Familiarity with safeguarding principles and child protection procedures.
  • Ability to administer medication and assist with health and hygiene routines.
  • Experience conducting or supporting training or child wellbeing sessions is an asset.

Soft Skills

Technical Skills

  • Basic First Aid and Emergency Response: Certification preferred.
  • Child Development Knowledge: Understanding of age-appropriate developmental stages.
  • Behavior Management Techniques: Competence in non-violent discipline and trauma-informed care.
  • Safeguarding and Protection: Strong awareness of child protection procedures and reporting mechanisms.
  • Medication Administration: Ability to handle and administer prescribed medications safely.
  • Household Management: Ensure cleanliness, hygiene, and order in the residential facility.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate logs of incidents, medication, and child wellbeing observations.
  • Collaboration Tools: Comfortable using basic communication tools (phone, messaging apps, etc.).
