About Operation Smile Ethiopia

Operation Smile is an international non‑profit organization providing free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries, along with nutrition support, psychosocial care, dental services, and speech therapy. Since 2005, Operation Smile has operated in Ethiopia through partnerships with major hospitals including Jimma University Medical Centre, SPHMMC, and Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.

Operation Smile recently expanded its partnership to Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. The organization is now recruiting a fresh graduate intern (MD) to support its clinical and program operations at SPHMMC.


Position Overview: Intern – St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College

This internship is designed for fresh medical graduates (MD) who are motivated to gain hands‑on experience in a hospital setting, particularly in cleft care coordination, patient management, and program support.


Qualifications & Required Skills

  • BA in Medicine (MD) from a recognized university (0 years of experience required).
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Amharic; Afan Oromo is an added advantage.
  • Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, Teams.
  • Knowledge of social media content development, posting, and monitoring.
  • Strong teamwork, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly coachable, motivated, and willing to learn.
  • Willing to work during regular hours with flexibility for occasional off‑hour tasks.
  • Must have a functional laptop (intern’s responsibility).

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Patient Coordinator in weekly patient recruitment and sequencing for cleft surgeries at SPHMMC.
  • Assist in outreach and awareness activities to encourage cleft surgery uptake in the community.
  • Work with the Program Manager on patient data management, including REDCap entry, PHR updates, monthly patient lists, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Logistics Coordinator and SPHMMC teams on medical supply quantification, forecasting, and equipment needs.
  • Support the clinical team and SPHMMC leadership in strengthening the partnership between Operation Smile and the hospital.
  • Perform additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Compensation

  • This is a non‑employment internship.
  • Operation Smile Ethiopia will provide a monthly stipend during the internship period.
  • Intern must bring their own functional laptop.
