The African Union Commission (AUC) is seeking qualified and motivated applicants for the position of Project Officer – Meteorology Expert (SEWA) under the Sustainable Environment & Blue Economy Department in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This role is part of the Space for Early Warning in Africa (SEWA) Project, funded by the European Union, aimed at strengthening Africa’s capacity to produce and deliver space-based meteorological and climate services for effective early warning systems.

Purpose of the Job
The Project Officer will provide technical expertise in meteorology and climate science with a focus on satellite-based data, forecasting, and early warning applications. The role involves coordinating with regional and international partners, supporting capacity building, and ensuring smooth implementation of SEWA activities.
Key Responsibilities

Support the SEWA Project Coordinator in technical and policy-related activities.

Work with technical partners such as EUMETSAT, ECMWF, RCCs, NMHSs, and AU Member States.

Assist in the establishment of the African Meteorological Satellite Application Facility (AMSAF).

Provide training and capacity-building for weather and climate services across Africa.

Develop and implement Impact-Based Forecasting (IBF) tools for hydroclimatic hazards.

Prepare technical reports, policy briefs, and project documents.

Contribute to continental and international forums on climate and meteorology.

Support resource mobilization and sustainability efforts for SEWA.
Academic Qualifications & Experience
-
Master’s degree in Meteorology, Climatology, Climate Science, or related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience;
OR
-
Bachelor’s degree in the same fields with 5 years of relevant experience.
Additional requirements:

Strong background in weather and climate services and the use of space-based data.

Experience working with regional and international partners (e.g., EUMETSAT, ECMWF, RCCs).

Proven track record in multi-stakeholder engagement and project implementation.

Knowledge of early warning systems and climate risk management.

Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and institutions.

Strong planning and problem-solving skills.

Proficiency in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Kiswahili, or Spanish); fluency in more is an advantage.

Remuneration

International Staff: USD 85,212.07 (annual lump-sum, inclusive of all allowances)
