Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) invites qualified and competent applicants for the following positions. AHRI was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute is named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).

AHRI was reorganized by the Council of Ministers' Regulation No. 376/2016 as a biomedical research, clinical trial, and research capacity building institute under the Federal Ministry of Health. Over its 50 years in service, AHRI is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact on the development and transformation of populations in Ethiopia and beyond.

Available Positions

Position 1: Junior Researcher (GIS & Remote Sensing)

Job Requirements:

• BSc/BA in GIS and Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Cartography, or related field.
• Experience: 0 years (Fresh Graduates).
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, AHRI

Salary: As per AHRI's contract employee salary scale.

Position 2: Junior Researcher (AI/ML Engineer)

Qualifications and Proficiency:

• BSc/MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence (AI) from a recognized university.
• Experience: 0 years (Fresh Graduates).
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
• Programming & AI Basics: Demonstrable foundational knowledge in relevant programming languages (such as Python or R) and familiarity with common data science/ML frameworks (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow).
• Operating System: Willingness to learn and basic ability to navigate and work in a Linux/Unix command-line environment (training will be provided for advanced HPC/Linux workflows).
• Interest: Strong, proven motivation to pursue a career in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and biomedical data research.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa

Salary: As per the scale of the institution.

Position 3: Assistant Researcher I – Statistics and Data Science

Required Education and Qualifications:

• BSc in Statistics, Data Science with strong quantitative training, or another closely related field.
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
• Experience: At least 2 years of relevant work experience in statistical analysis, data science, health research, surveillance, research data management, or a comparable quantitative role.

Position 4: Researcher II (Laboratory Manager)

Educational Qualifications:

• Required: PhD in Medical Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field.
• Experience: At least 2 years of experience.
• Publication Points: ≥ 6 (Applicants must attach their publication link along with their CV).

Position 5: Assistant Researchers I (Study Nurses)

Required Qualification:

• BSc degree in Nursing with active license.
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
• Experience: 2 years of clinical experience.
• Clinical research or trial experience is preferred.
• Experience in neonatal/pediatric care is preferred.
• Skills in anthropometric measurements and biological sample collection.
• Good interpersonal and counselling skills.
• Ability to conduct field/home visits in community settings.

Salary: 35,148.00 ETB

House Allowance: 6,500.00 ETB

Duty Location: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, to be assigned to different study sites across Addis Ababa.

Position 6: Assistant Researcher I (Study Laboratory Technologist)

Education and Experience:

• BSc Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
• Experience: 2 years of laboratory work experience.
• Health research or clinical experience is preferred.

Specialized Skills:

• Experience with aerobic bacterial culture using conventional and automated methods is a plus.
• Competence in culture media preparation, maintenance, and purification of bacterial stocks is a plus.
• Familiarity with cell culture techniques and basic immunological and molecular assays (PCR, qPCR) is a plus.
• Skill in identifying and characterizing bacterial species.
• Knowledge of biosafety, aseptic technique, and quality assurance procedures.

Salary: 35,148.00 ETB

House Allowance: 6,500.00 ETB

Duty Location: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, to be assigned to different study sites across Addis Ababa.

Position 7: Junior Researcher (Study Pharmacists)

Required Qualification:

• B.Pharm degree with an active license to practice.
• Minimum CGPA of 3.00 for male and 2.75 for female applicants.
• Experience: 0 years (Fresh Graduates).
• In-depth knowledge of GCP, pharmacy laws, and ethical guidelines related to clinical trials is preferable.
• Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills for accurate record-keeping.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary research team.

Salary: 27,464.00 ETB

House Allowance: 5,000.00 ETB

Duty Location: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, to be assigned to different study sites across Addis Ababa.
