Environmental Health Manager – Afar Project (Re‑Advertised)
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF‑Belgium) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Environmental Health Manager to support its Afar Project in Semera City. This role is critical in planning, coordinating, implementing, and monitoring all logistics activities related to water, health, and sanitation in line with MSF protocols and standards.
About the Role
The Environmental Health Manager ensures optimal project operations by overseeing environmental health interventions, including water supply, sanitation, waste management, hygiene promotion, and infection control. The role requires close collaboration with medical and logistical teams to design strategies, manage resources, and ensure compliance with MSF standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and monitor environmental health activities in collaboration with project coordinators.
- Design and manage interventions such as water supply systems, excreta disposal, waste management, and infection control.
- Conduct environmental health assessments and recommend response activities.
- Ensure proper procurement, inventory, and technical specifications of materials and equipment.
- Support HR processes including recruitment, training, and evaluation of environmental health staff.
- Provide technical support to medical teams on infection control and risk factors.
- Collect, analyze, and report environmental health data regularly.
- Oversee construction and maintenance of boreholes, latrines, waste zones, and hygiene facilities.
- Prepare emergency response plans and budgets for outbreak situations.
- Ensure compliance with IPC protocols, vector control, and MSF quality standards.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Essential: BSc in Environmental Health Science, Environmental Health Engineering, Hydraulic & Water Resource Engineering, or Occupational Health and Safety.
- OR Master’s in the same fields.
- Desirable: Training certificates in sanitary engineering or emergency environmental health.
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years in WASH project management, preferably in humanitarian or emergency settings.
- Proven managerial experience (team size must be clearly stated in CV).
- Experience with MSF, NGOs, or humanitarian organizations is an asset.
- Other Requirements:
- Flexibility to work weekends and public holidays in emergencies.
- Fluency in English (knowledge of local languages is desirable).
- Strong competencies in teamwork, results orientation, flexibility, and people management.
Skills
