The United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), established by the UN General Assembly Resolution 64/288 on 1 July 2010, is mandated to enhance the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union in the area of peace and security.

The Office integrated three offices: Department of Political Affairs (DPA/ now the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, DPPA) Liaison Office, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO/now the Department of Peace Operations – DPO) AU Peace Support Team and the Department of Field Support (DFS) Planning Team for Somalia to support the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), as well as the support component of the United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Joint Support Coordination Mechanism (JCM) office in Addis Ababa.

Qualifications/special skills:

Education Requirements for the United Nations Internship Programme

To be eligible for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet the following educational criteria:

  • At the time of application, candidates must satisfy one of the following conditions:
    • (a) Be currently enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (i.e., a second university degree or higher); or
    • (b) Be currently enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • The field of study must be closely related to the nature of the internship for which you are applying — for example, Communications, Media Studies, Journalism, or a similar discipline.

Note:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, it is essential that your academic background aligns with the internship’s subject matter.

  • Applicants must be:
    • A student in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme;
      or
    • A recent graduate of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme.

If you meet any of the above criteria, please clearly indicate which one applies to you and attach proof (such as an enrollment letter or diploma) to your application. You will also be required to submit an official certificate at a later stage.
