Operation Smile Ethiopia Internship Opportunity

Operation Smile Ethiopia (OSE) is seeking a Communications & Documentation Intern to support its program teams in documenting, packaging, and communicating promising practices, program activities, and results.

This is a temporary, non-employment internship opportunity based at the Operation Smile Ethiopia Head Office in Addis Ababa. The opportunity is suitable for fresh graduates with zero years of experience who have an academic background in communication, journalism, public relations, social sciences, health sciences, or related fields.

Education and Qualifications

Applicants should have:

  • A BA degree in Journalism and Communication, Public Relations and Strategic Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Linguistics, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, or another relevant discipline from a recognized university.
  • Zero years of work experience; the position is intended for fresh graduates.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and Amharic.
  • Strong knowledge of English.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in content production and editing, including video content.
  • Knowledge and practical use of social media in a positive and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, internet, Teams, and financial tools.
  • Motivation to work in documentation and communication as an intern.
  • Coordination and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn and ability to accept coaching.
  • Willingness to work during regular working hours, with flexibility to work outside regular hours when required.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications & Documentation Intern will:

  • Support the overall documentation and communication of Operation Smile Ethiopia program activities under the supervision of the Program Manager.
  • Develop appropriate methods and approaches for documenting surgical, non-surgical comprehensive cleft care, medical education, and other program activities.
  • Work with Program Coordinators at partner hospitals in Jimma, Ayder, St. Paul’s, and Hawassa to document best practices and program results.
  • Capture and document program activities through narratives, case stories, photographs, videos, and other appropriate methods.
  • Document short-term surgical programs (STSP), surgical campaigns, surgical education programs (SEP), trainings, workshops, meetings, and other activities.
  • Support the preparation of quarterly, semiannual, and annual bulletins highlighting key achievements of the country office.
  • Produce short videos highlighting key program outputs, promising practices, and activities.
  • Prepare regular updates on program successes and share them with the Program Manager for review.
  • Prepare summary messages about major program activities and achievements for publication on Operation Smile Ethiopia's social media platforms.
  • Work with the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Communications Manager and OSE Program Manager on sharing Ethiopia program successes through SSA social media channels.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Internship Compensation

This is a temporary, non-employment internship. Operation Smile Ethiopia will provide a fair stipend to cover daily costs.

The intern is responsible for providing their own functional laptop.

Operation Smile is an international nonprofit organization that provides free surgical and non-surgical services to people born with cleft conditions. Its services include surgical care as well as comprehensive support such as nutrition interventions, psychosocial care, dental care, and speech therapy.
