About the Project

The Civil Engineer will support the construction of a new primary school infrastructure for Gazanche Primary School in the Gurage Zone. The school currently faces severe overcrowding and unsafe facilities, with “up to 80 students per classroom” and deteriorated buildings .

Planned improvements include:

  • New classrooms, administration & library buildings
  • Gender‑separated sanitation facilities
  • Fencing, walkways, drainage & landscaping
  • Solar power installations

These upgrades aim to create a safe, inclusive, climate‑resilient learning environment aligned with SDG 4.


Position: Civil Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Project Management & Coordination

  • Plan, supervise, and manage civil engineering works from design to completion.
  • Support project scheduling, reporting, and closure activities.
  • Liaise with authorities, beneficiaries, and stakeholders to secure permits and approvals.
  • Participate in procurement processes and evaluation committees.

Construction Supervision & Quality Assurance

  • Review design briefs, BoQs, cost estimates, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct on‑site inspections to ensure compliance with UNOPS standards.
  • Verify quantities, review technical submittals, and support payment certification.
  • Monitor contractor performance and identify delays or cost risks.

HSSE Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with UNOPS HSSE and PSEAH standards.
  • Identify and mitigate environmental, safety, and community risks.
  • Promote sustainable and green construction practices.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate site records, inspection logs, and incident reports.
  • Submit weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports.
  • Support commissioning, handover, and documentation archiving.

Knowledge Sharing

  • Support training sessions and learning activities.
  • Contribute to Communities of Practice and knowledge‑sharing initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Structural Engineering, or related field with 2 years’ experience,
    OR Master’s degree with 0 years’ experience (as stated in the document: “Master’s degree… with 0 years of relevant experience is required”) .
  • Experience in civil engineering, structural works, construction supervision, or related fields.
  • Fluency in English and Amharic (both required).
  • Experience in multicultural or UN environments is desirable.
