Job Summary

The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer will coordinate the collection, compilation, consolidation, and analysis of data used to monitor programs and projects, track progress, and support impact measurement.

The position will also support development research, reflective practice, lessons learned, M&E planning, and field-level data management. The officer will help ensure that park objectives are properly monitored and that reliable data is available for management decision-making, reporting, and evaluation.

The role serves as a central point for the park's data pipeline by helping define relevant metrics, supporting departments responsible for data collection, checking data integrity, and converting data into useful analysis for the park management unit.

Key Responsibilities

Data Management, Collection and Analysis

  • Translate the park's Long Term Sustainable Strategy and business plan priorities into a monitoring program with appropriate core or park-specific metrics.
  • Work with Heads of Departments to ensure that metrics are clearly defined, assigned, and practical to collect within existing workflows.
  • Support and train departments on data collection tools, instruments, frequency, and purpose.
  • Participate in the African Parks system champion network covering platforms such as EarthRanger, SAGE, Survey123, and other relevant systems.
  • Help ensure data captured through different systems is accurate, aligned with defined metrics, and properly analyzed and used.
  • Serve as the first point of contact within the park for cross-system data questions, new or revised data requirements, and onboarding of new users.
  • Apply African Parks standards and the Data & Metrics Technical Manual as common references across departments.
  • Regularly update the Park Data Audit Tracker Tool and follow up unresolved data-quality issues through to closure.
  • Conduct routine data-integrity checks between collection and reporting stages.
  • Prepare monthly and periodic submissions, including AP Reporter and BP Tracker inputs, for validation and Funding & Reporting Manager sign-off.
  • Prepare data-based analyses and presentation materials for mid-year reviews, business plan revisions, and quarterly discussions.
  • Promote the use of dashboards and data products within the Park Management Unit to support evidence-based assessment of progress.
  • Coordinate or consolidate park-level surveys, case studies, and data collection activities supporting impact assessment.
  • Compile and quality-check park data for validation.
  • Respond to data requests from headquarters and the Park Management Unit and submit information for verification.
  • Maintain documentation relating to the park's monitoring program.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Track progress against monitoring work plans.
  • Coordinate field-level community participatory monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Support reflective practice and impact measurement activities.
  • Conduct monthly and/or quarterly analysis of performance indicators.
  • Prepare performance reports and presentations for staff.
  • Participate in M&E team activities, system assessments, and the development and implementation of tools designed to strengthen M&E practices.
  • Support the recruitment of enumerators and other data collectors.
  • Support surveys and the engagement of consultants where required.
  • Conduct periodic reflective practice forums at project level.
  • Compile lessons learned from project implementation.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the line manager.

Compliance and Safety

  • Follow African Parks health and safety, fire, and environmental policies.
  • Cooperate with management in meeting health and safety obligations.
  • Take reasonable care of personal health and safety and that of others affected by workplace activities.
  • Follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure operational practices comply with applicable organizational policies, standards, procedures, and regulations.
  • Maintain strict compliance with relevant procedures, policies, standards, and regulations.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Conservation, Biology, Statistics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or another relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience in monitoring and evaluation, data management, conservation science, or a related field.
  • Experience working in a protected area or field-based operation is an advantage.
  • Full professional competency in English and the national language, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage.
  • Practical experience with data collection and management systems such as EarthRanger, Survey123, SAGE, SIMBA, or comparable platforms.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new data systems.
  • Ability to manage data throughout the full process, including structuring collection, checking data integrity, analyzing information, and presenting results clearly to non-technical colleagues.
  • Working knowledge of monitoring and evaluation frameworks and indicator design.
  • Ability to support and train colleagues across different departments.
  • Methodical and persistent approach to identifying and resolving data-quality issues.
  • Resilience and flexibility to work effectively in remote areas.
