Etcareers is announcing a new career opportunity with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in Ethiopia for 2026. The Commission is recruiting a Human Rights Officer specializing in socio‑economic rights to be based in Jimma City. This full‑time position is offered on an open contract basis and focuses on monitoring, advocacy, and protection of economic and social rights. The role provides an opportunity to contribute to research, campaigns, and stakeholder engagement in Ethiopia’s human rights sector.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is a national institution mandated to promote and protect human rights in Ethiopia. The Commission undertakes monitoring, advocacy, education, and investigations, while collaborating with government institutions, civil society, media, UN agencies, and development partners to strengthen compliance with human rights standards.


Open Position

Position 1: Human Rights Officer – Socio‑Economic Rights

  • Employment Type: Full‑time, open contract/indefinite period
  • Job Location: Jimma City, Ethiopia

Responsibilities

  • Conduct monitoring activities on human rights in various sectors
  • Undertake research and analyses to identify violations and legislative gaps
  • Produce reports with remedial recommendations on compliance with standards
  • Organize awareness campaigns and educational programs on socio‑economic rights
  • Support advocacy through dialogues, forums, and conferences
  • Investigate complaints related to violations of socio‑economic rights
  • Draft reports, communications, and briefing notes on human rights issues
  • Contribute to annual plans aligned with EHRC’s Strategic Plan
  • Establish partnerships with stakeholders including government, civil society, and international organizations
  • Monitor and evaluate projects against objectives and indicators
  • Provide regular updates to the Director on progress and challenges

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: MA/BA Degree in LLM, Human Rights Law, or International Law
  • Work Experience: 4 years for BA holders; 2 years for MA holders
  • Technical Skills: Computer literacy
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication, analytical ability, collaboration skills

Preferred / Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Amharic and English required
  • Knowledge of other local languages advantageous

Salary & Benefits

  • Monthly salary of 27,129 – 31,405 Ethiopian Birr
  • House allowance of 12,100 Birr
  • Transport allowance of 4,000 Birr
