Position: Biodiversity and Natural Resources Management Officer
Purpose of the Role
The Officer contributes to the Ecosystem‑based Solutions for Biodiversity Conservation and Resilient Livelihoods (ECOR) Project, which strengthens conservation of forests, wetlands, rangelands, and wildlife habitats while enhancing community resilience. The role involves planning, implementing, and providing technical oversight for biodiversity conservation and natural resource management interventions.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement ECOR project activities in collaboration with project staff and government stakeholders.
- Lead biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration interventions (forests, wetlands, rangelands, wildlife habitats).
- Support establishment and strengthening of Participatory Forest Management Cooperatives (PFMCs) and community institutions.
- Facilitate restoration of degraded ecosystems using nature‑based solutions (soil/water conservation, assisted regeneration, enrichment planting).
- Promote sustainable land‑use practices balancing conservation and livelihoods.
- Design and deliver training for communities on climate‑smart practices and ecosystem restoration.
- Strengthen governance systems (PFM groups, watershed committees, wetland user groups).
- Support biodiversity monitoring systems and human‑wildlife conflict mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with government institutions, NGOs, and partners to align with national frameworks (CRGE, NDCs, biodiversity strategies).
- Collect and report data, contribute to Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL), and document best practices.
- Uphold Farm Africa’s safeguarding policies and ethical conduct standards.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- BSc/MSc in Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biodiversity, Watershed Management, or related fields.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years in biodiversity conservation or natural resource management projects.
- Practical experience in participatory forest management and community‑based conservation.
- Experience with NGOs and government institutions in Ethiopia (desirable).
Skills
- Strong understanding of ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and integrated landscape approaches.
- Excellent communication and community engagement skills.
- Ability to design and deliver training programs.
- Commitment to gender mainstreaming and inclusive participation.
