About the African Union (AU)

The African Union Commission (AUC) is Africa’s premier continental body promoting unity, peace, development, and integration across 55 member states.

The Head of Communication Division will lead the AUC’s Information and Communication Department (ICD) and provide strategic communication leadership to promote the AU’s policies, programmes, and Agenda 2063 vision.


Purpose of the Job

  • Direct and manage the daily operations of the Communication Division.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies and campaigns on priority AU issues.
  • Promote AU activities, institutions, and programmes to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strengthen partnerships with media, civil society, academia, the private sector, and development partners.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Communication & Outreach

  • Develop communication strategies for AU priority areas: agriculture, trade, education, energy, health, peace and security.
  • Lead campaigns to publicize AU institutions (e.g., Pan-African Parliament, AUDA-NEPAD, African Peer Review Mechanism).
  • Build partnerships with media, academia, private sector, youth, and civil society.
  • Produce high-quality publications, reports, case studies, and digital content.
  • Oversee storytelling, editorial reviews, branding, and content development.

Internal Communication & Coordination

  • Lead internal communication initiatives across AU departments.
  • Support AU leadership in promoting key policies and organizational updates.
  • Manage media relations and ensure proper use of AU branding guidelines.

Division & Staff Management

  • Supervise 9 direct reports, manage performance, and promote professional growth.
  • Oversee the division’s budget and ensure effective resource allocation.
  • Provide technical leadership and ensure timely delivery of divisional targets.

Requirements

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Marketing, or related field.
  • Professional qualifications in marketing or PR are an added advantage.

Experience

  • At least 12 years of relevant professional experience, including:
    • 7 years at senior management level.
    • 5 years of supervisory responsibilities.
  • Proven international/regional experience in communications for large organizations.
  • Strong track record in digital marketing, brand strategy, content creation, and campaigns.

Skills

  • Strategic communication and brand management expertise.
  • Strong leadership, change management, and staff development abilities.
  • Excellent budget management and program delivery skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and modern digital communication tools.
  • Languages: Proficiency in one AU working language (English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Kiswahili); fluency in a second is an advantage.

Contract & Benefits

  • Duration: 3 years (first year probation, renewable based on performance).
  • Remuneration: USD 50,746.00 per annum (P5 Step 1) + Post Adjustment (46% of salary).
  • Allowances:
    • Housing: USD 26,208 per annum
    • Education: Up to USD 10,000 per eligible child (internationally recruited)
    • Up to USD 3,300 per child (locally recruited)
