Job Summary
The Cashier Accountant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of JDC Ethiopia by managing cash and bank transactions, processing payments, maintaining accurate accounting records, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and donor requirements, and supporting effective financial controls.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cash Management and Banking
- Maintain records of cash, bank transactions, and advances with daily reconciliations.
- Process authorized cash and bank payments and receipts.
- Manage petty cash and monitor project expenditures.
- Prepare daily cash position reports and forecast cash requirements.
- Process electronic banking transactions and maintain banking records.
- Coordinate bank account documentation and correspondence.
- Prepare weekly payment schedules for approval.
- Safeguard cash, cheque books, bank tokens, and financial documents.
2. Accounting and Financial Transactions
- Record financial transactions in accordance with organizational accounting policies.
- Prepare monthly cash, bank, and advance reconciliations.
- Process staff travel advances, supplier advances, and liquidations.
- Support payments to suppliers, contractors, and service providers.
- Assist with month-end financial closing activities.
- Maintain the fixed asset register.
3. Documentation and Financial Records
- Verify supporting documents before processing payments.
- Match invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, and Goods Received Notes (GRNs).
- Ensure timely collection and filing of financial documents.
- Maintain organized financial records for audit readiness.
4. Compliance and Internal Controls
- Process statutory deductions, including income tax, withholding tax, VAT, and pension contributions.
- Process procurement-related replenishment requests.
- Support compliance with procurement and financial procedures.
- Participate in cash counts and inventory verification.
- Report suspected fraud, theft, financial irregularities, or policy violations.
- Maintain compliance with internal control procedures.
5. Other Duties
- Perform additional finance-related assignments as requested by the Director of Budget & Finance.
Educational Qualification
Applicants must hold:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Advantageous Qualification
- Professional certification such as ACCA, CPA, CMA, or an equivalent qualification.
Work Experience
Applicants must have:
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in accounting, cashiering, or finance.
- Experience working with international NGOs or donor-funded projects is preferred.
- Experience in cash management, bank reconciliations, petty cash administration, accounting transactions, and statutory tax compliance.
- Experience with donor-funded projects is highly desirable.
Required Technical Skills
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial controls.
- Knowledge of Ethiopian tax regulations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience using accounting or ERP software such as SAP, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar systems.
- Strong documentation, reconciliation, and record-keeping skills.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English and Amharic.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
