Position Overview

The U.S. Mission in Ethiopia is seeking qualified applicants for the position of American Citizen Services (ACS) Assistant in the Consular Section. The ACS Assistant provides passport, citizenship, and special consular services for U.S. citizens in Ethiopia, serving as a primary point of contact and supporting crisis preparedness and response.


Duties

  • Provide passport, citizenship, and consular services to U.S. citizens.
  • Serve as a primary contact for U.S. citizens in the consular district.
  • Maintain a network of public and private sector contacts to assist U.S. citizens.
  • Communicate directly with applicants and citizens in distress.
  • Assist in preparing emergency messaging and website updates.
  • Support crisis preparedness and response with ACS Chief and consular officers.
  • Perform administrative duties and support other consular units as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of two years of college or university studies.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of administrative work, case management, or customer service experience.

Language

  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Fluent in Amharic (speaking, reading, writing).

Knowledge

  • Understanding of local cultural, social, and legal environment.

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to act independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Initiative, tact, and discretion to handle sensitive cases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to maintain relationships with local officials and high‑level contacts.
  • Ability to work professionally with diverse contacts and customers.

Position Details

  • Salary: USD $14,371 per year
  • Work Schedule: Full‑time, 40 hours per week
  • Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Appointment Type: Permanent, subject to probationary period
  • Security Clearance: Public Trust – Background Investigation
  • Travel Required: Occasional (prison visits, welfare checks, court visits, outreach events).
