Position Overview

The U.S. Mission in Ethiopia is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Consular Assistant (General) in the Consular Section. The role involves handling visa cases, correspondence, consular events, and administrative support for consular staff.


Duties

  • Handle Immigrant and Non‑Immigrant Visa cases, including fiancée, adoption, refugee/asylee follow‑to‑join, and Congressional correspondence.
  • Prepare and advise on travel arrangements for consular staff official trips, conferences, and TDYs.
  • Receive and review incoming correspondence (letters, faxes, emails) and route appropriately.
  • Maintain and update consular contact databases and HR tracking lists for Americans traveling in/out of Ethiopia.
  • Manage revocation files, abandoned LPR cards, and coordinate with USCIS/NVC.
  • Act as alternate cashier and Time & Attendance backup.
  • Order supplies, handle procurement requests, and coordinate facility maintenance issues.
  • Support consular IT systems and equipment functionality.
  • Interpret for consular officers during interviews.

Qualifications

Education

  • Completion of high school education.

Experience

  • Minimum two years of progressively responsible experience in administration, government services, or para‑professional work.

Language

  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Fluent in Amharic (speaking, reading, writing).

Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of consular section procedures, U.S. immigration law, USCIS regulations, and Embassy consular policies.
  • Familiarity with Ethiopian civil law regarding identity and relationships.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to operate IT and consular equipment (PCs, visa printers, scanners, seals, copiers, fax machines).
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Access databases.
  • Ability to apply U.S. and Ethiopian law to immigration cases.
  • Strong listening and advisory skills for consular clients.
  • Patience, professionalism, and ethical conduct under pressure.
  • Flexibility and teamwork with colleagues.
