The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is recruiting an Amharic, Oromo & Tigrinya Interpreter for humanitarian assignments in Ethiopia. The position involves interpretation and translation between English and local languages, confidential communication, reporting, and support for ICRC protection and other humanitarian activities.

Position Overview

The Interpreter facilitates accurate and meaningful communication between ICRC delegates, affected populations, authorities, and other stakeholders. The role may involve work in sensitive humanitarian environments, including protection activities, visits to people deprived of liberty, family reunification, and dialogue with parties to conflict.

Key Responsibilities

Interpretation

  • Provide oral interpretation between Amharic, Oromo and/or Tigrinya and English.
  • Interpret during confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty.
  • Support ICRC institutional dissemination and dialogue with authorities.
  • Provide interpretation during family-links activities, including Red Cross messages, family tracing, and visits to families of detainees.
  • Facilitate communication with beneficiaries, authorities, and other stakeholders.

Written Translation

  • Translate written materials from Amharic, Oromo and/or Tigrinya into English.
  • Translate materials such as newspaper articles and correspondence.

Analysis and Reporting

  • Support analysis and reporting related to detention conditions, security, and other matters relevant to ICRC activities.
  • Contribute to protection activities and other humanitarian operations as required.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Language Requirements

  • Excellent English – C1.
  • Excellent Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya – C1.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the listed local languages is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of other ICRC operational languages, including French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Portuguese, is a strong asset.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience.
  • Previous experience as an interpreter or translator is an advantage.
  • Experience working in humanitarian environments is an advantage.

Education

  • A university degree in Interpretation, Translation, or a related field is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong motivation to work in the humanitarian field.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in potentially dangerous environments.
  • Open-minded, adaptable, and able to work effectively with people from different backgrounds.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.

Operational and Field Requirements

  • Due to ICRC neutrality, personnel are not assigned to a country of which they are nationals.
  • Candidates must be in good health and undergo a medical check-up before field departure.
  • A driving licence for manual transmission vehicles is required.
  • Willingness to undertake unaccompanied postings during the first two missions.
  • The first two missions have a minimum duration of 12 months each, for a total of 24 months.
