About the Position
The position is located within the Publications and Conference Management Section (PCMS) of UNECA's Administration and Conference Management Division in Addis Ababa.
The incumbent works under the overall guidance of the Chief of PCMS and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Production Services Unit (PSU).
The Publishing Officer is responsible for publishing and information activities, publication production, graphic design, digital publishing, dissemination, stakeholder coordination, and publishing-related data analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on the delegated authority and location, the Publishing Officer may be responsible for:
- Ensuring the implementation of publishing and information programs supporting priority issues and major events.
- Drafting publishing strategies and coordinating production activities.
- Monitoring and reporting on publishing progress and taking appropriate follow-up action.
- Analyzing publishing outcomes and providing relevant information to management.
- Monitoring developments in publishing, design, and digital distribution.
- Identifying publishing-related issues and trends and advising management on appropriate responses.
- Developing outreach and distribution plans to promote the dissemination of UN publications, including print, electronic, and multimedia publications.
- Engaging with partners and consulting with clients regarding design and production requirements.
- Coordinating the dissemination of publications and responding to information requests.
- Producing or overseeing the end-to-end production of United Nations publications.
- Managing publication planning, graphic design, page layout, typography, infographics, cover design, prepress preparation, colour management, accessibility compliance, print production, digital publishing, and quality assurance.
- Preparing initial drafts of content for UN publications and knowledge products based on official UN documentation and other sources.
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with authors, editors, translators, designers, printers, and vendors.
- Serving as a focal point for specific publishing issues and responding to related inquiries.
- Participating in the selection of information and materials for publication and dissemination.
- Providing guidance to and potentially supervising junior staff.
- Contributing directly to design assignments and mentoring staff on publishing workflows, design assignments, and production tasks.
- Collecting and analyzing publishing-related data to identify trends and patterns.
- Presenting data insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports using data visualization methods.
- Supporting data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting.
- Ensuring that requirements and background information used for data analysis are properly documented.
Education Requirements
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in one of the following fields is required:
- Publishing
- Graphic Design
- Visual Communication Design
- Print and Media Technology
- Digital Publishing
- Desktop Publishing
- Industrial Design
- Multimedia Design, with an emphasis on publication design
- A related field
A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Successful completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in one or more of the following areas is required:
- Publication production
- Graphic design
- Desktop publishing
- Editorial production
- Print production
- Digital publishing
Experience using professional desktop publishing software, including:
- Adobe InDesign
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Photoshop
is required.
Experience producing reports, books, or other publications from manuscript through final print-ready and digital formats is desirable, including experience with:
- Page layout
- Typography
- Graphic design
- Prepress preparation
- Quality assurance
- Coordination with editors, translators, designers, and printers
The following experience is also desirable:
- Producing accessible digital publications
- Producing interactive PDF publications
- Working with international organizations or large publishing environments
- Data analytics or a related field
Language Requirements
English is required for this job opening.
French is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
